Ichiban Salad

This is courtesy of my Auntie Anne, who has been making this bad boy for years. It's always a hit.

Ingredients:

SALAD
  • one package coleslaw vegetables
  • one package Oriental Mr.Noodles
  • one package slivered almonds
DRESSING
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 TBSP. white vinegar
  • 2 TBSP. white sugar
  • flavour packet from Mr.Noodles
  1. Lightly toast the almonds in a small skillet
  2. In a sealed container, mix together all of the ingredients for the dressing.
  3. Just prior to serving, mix all of the ingredients and the dressing together and serve immediately.
Optional ingredient, which has proven to be a delicious addition over the years:
  • Craisins

Garage Sale

So, my friend Michelle and I are hosting a garage sale at her place tomorrow morning. At first, I really thought it sounded like a great idea, where I could purge some crap from the house (especially when your house is a trailer the size of someone else's recreational vehicle).

So last weekend, I started wading through our sea of stuff, deciding the fate of our possessions, and which items could stay, and which could go. But then it hit me....garage sales are a lot of work!!! I've been searching, lugging, dusting, labelling, boxing, and carrying this stuff out to the car all week. And Lord help me if I forget to hide this stuff out of Sophie's view. She can't figure out what her Handy Manny doll is doing in the back of the Matrix.

So we'll see tomorrow if it was all worth it. Michelle and I are thinking about taking our earnings and treating ourselves to hot-stone massages at Merle Norman. God, she's a genius, 'cause we'll both need them after this garage sale.

P.S. Garage sales/flea markets/yard sales always remind me of a time when we were living in Summerside (I think I was 10), and Mom, Dad, Mark, Ellen and I spent a week preparing for a trip to the local flea market. Now, if you know anything at all about my Dad organizing this type of event, it wasn't the most stress-free family memory. But we did it. We made it to the flea market with allof our wares in a little trailer that we hauled behind our Ford Bronco. And after that exhausting morning, we made somewhere close to $400 if I remember correctly....which all went towards fixing the gaping hole that the trailer put into the side of our Bronco as SOMEONE (I won't say who) was backing into our driveway. :) Oh Happy Days!

First Post - Friday June 3rd, 2011

So, a few weeks back, we had a stretch of weather here in Yellowknife that was apparently very deceiving.Brent and I packed the girls into the car, and headed over to Arctic Farmer, which is a great name, don't you think? http://www.arcticfarmer.com/

We bought pansies, wave petunias, sunflowers, and other unsuspecting flora that would soon meet their fate in our backyard planter.

Tuesday, the temperature hit 26 degrees, and then yesterday and today, it snowed. It was -6 last night. We covered those poor little guys up, but who knows if they'll make it.

I also heard from my Uncle Lorne today that the three robin's eggs outside his house in Alberton have met their fate. He will be resuming his squirrel jihad very soon.

So, four weeks until the girls and I make our trek to the Island for the summer. This will be Sophie's 8th (almost) cross-country plane trip. What a traveller.

So see you all in a few weeks, and enjoy the blog. I will post some family pictures, special event stuff, and share some thoughts (and my favorite recipes) along the way. This, I guess, is my anti-facebook solution to staying connected online.
